Traditional Half-Sole Resole vs Factory-Match or Premium: What’s Best?

When your shoes need a resole, you’ve got options—but not all resoles are the same. You can opt for sole replacement that matches the original factory shape, while others stick to the traditional half-sole resole.  While factory-matched soles sound appealing, the traditional half-sole offers better value and faster turnaround.

Traditional Half‑Sole Resole

  • Only the front half of the sole—where most wear happens—is replaced.

  • Can include a rand repair if you have waited to long to resole.

  • This is by far the most common option, and is always cheaper.

Exact Manufacturer’s Sole or Premium Resole

  • The entire front part of the sole is removed and replaced on shoes designed with a two part sole.  (eg La Sportiva Drogo etc)

  • Resolers create an identical sole shape and size to what's on the shoes.

  • Often used if you want to retain the look of the original design

  • More expensive than a half-sole as it takes longer and uses more rubber.

Traditional Half Sole vs Premium

The red line shows the traditional half sole replacement and the blue line indicates the factory match or premium sole replacement.

Which One Should You Choose?

Half‑sole resole is your go-to if:

  • Wear is concentrated at the toe/front of the shoe.
  • You want a cost-effective, fast repair.

Premium sole replacement is worth it if:

  • The entire sole is worn down, not just the front.  I guess this can happen, but not very likely under normal use.
  • You want the exact factory look restored.
  • The extra expense is not an issue.

Pro Tip

  • Keep an eye on the line between the sole and rand. When it begins to dip or you see the rand, it’s time for intervention.
  • Resoling too late (when rand is damaged) often means rand repairs and more money.
  • Choose the rubber compound based on your climbing style—harder compounds for edging and long life, softer for smearing and friction.

In short:   Most climbers are best served by a half‑sole resole, which restores performance at a fair price while preserving the original fit. If you want factory-perfect looks—a premium sole replacement might be worth it.

Uncarved Block does not currently offer a Premium or factory matched sole at this time.  Scotty Dog Resoles does though!
